When purchasing a vehicle, it is always important to question whether you can really afford it or not because if you aren’t careful, you will end up being in debt or dedicating a great portion of your paycheck to sustaining your automobile bills. Too often people rely on loans to cover the purchase of their vehicle and forget that they’re many other expenses to contend with. Before you decide on purchasing a vehicle, here a few tips that will help you look at the bigger picture.
Things to consider:

TRUE EXPENSES
Apart from the monthly car payments, there’s insurance, maintenance, gas, depreciation, taxes and repairs. Over a period of time, accumulated expenses will surpass the original cost of the vehicle and it can be very difficult to keep up with these expenses.

DO YOUR RESEARCH
Before heading to the car dealership you should have a solid idea of the selling price for the vehicle that you wish to purchase and you should have a financial plan already established rather than rely on the dealership to offer a payment plan. Car dealerships are notorious for offering consumers financial payment plans that will cost you more in the end.

BEWARE OF CAR LOANS
You would think that lenders only approve consumers that they know will be more likely to repay the loans and give payments on time. However, in recent years, loan standards have dropped and lenders are looking to give money to consumers that they know will not be able to keep up with the payments. The reason behind this is because with increased or high interest rates they will be able to get money from the consumer regardless of their tardiness in repaying the entirety of the loan.

PAYING CASH
If you choose to get a used car for your first vehicle, it is advised that you use cash to purchase it because this alleviates having to deal with monthly car payments and gives you the opportunity to use that money towards maintenance, gas and insurance. It is in your best interest to save as much money as you can before you purchase your first car and don’t solely rely on loans to foot the bill.

DO YOU REALLY NEED A CAR
Question whether having a car is a necessity or just for show. If you’re living in an urbanized area where transportation is right outside of your door, then think twice about making that purchase. Buying a car and taking the public transportation can be difference between spending $8,000 and $1,500 a year.
